this was you last class period. i'm thinking - this should be you. how google saved a school more high tech high inspiration...calculicious making geeks cool could reform ed may start to see more“free agent students” who create their own ala carte learning path, learning more and morefrom peers and from experiences And the tool for these “alternate” forms? ePortfolios, ....students - “free agents,” involved in experiential learning experiences, working in teams, working in authentic situations that present evaluation challenges to faculty, perhaps an ePortfolio thatcontains evidence of the learning for later review is necessary. We are too much stuck by our current arrangements: test-based evaluation and classscheduling (seat time). Learning is least effective as an assembly line experience, which callsinto question the assembly line means by which higher education institutions have monetizedlearning. Freeing us from the assembly line grid would allow us to innovate. Electronicportfolios are another way to organize learning experience and therefore allow learning to bemore mobile and varied. Using ePortfolios in this way is what the panelist called not “teacher-centered,” nor “learner-centered,” but “learning-centered.”

new thoughts on assessment: 1. first attempts are freebies (ie: first test, first project, etc)
2. everything after that graded on improvement. so you have to figure your % improvement and make sure that is always increasing
3. if % improvement is always increasing - you have a b for your class grade
4. if you wow us with a remarkable project (see below group two) - at least one over the course of the year - you have an a for your class grade
more directed thoughts on groups:
everyone is in two groups (people can overlap in groups, whatever):
GROUP 1: is your professional learning network (pln). in comparison to what you know - it's like your group in the classroom - but way better - because you pick your group. you have some people there you will need to help/teach/stretch (middle school, africa?, your parents?...) and you have some people there who will help/teach/stretch you (other highschool students, college kids, hass, me, ....)
the goal for this group: make sure that you are learning all the algebra 2 topics,
assessment will be per ongoing tests (acuity, csap, act, ones i give, etc)
GROUP 2: let's call it your passion stretching network (psn) until we come up with a better name - or change this idea all together. in comparison to what you know - this is like pj's group for building the best snowboard run or gus's group for working on a music project, or someone's group working on a better ways for ed to work - like better ways to assess kids in school, better ways to teach math,.... this might be a small group - with just 3 members - you, a professional in what you're doing, and me (sorry - i gotta). but it can be as big as you'd like.
the goal for this group: make sure that you are learning how to learn. you-centered and you-directed. you will have to learn how to start things up - make your own timeline - research, organize, and create a product worthy of being deemed remarkable. (which - i would think would be steeped in it's usefulness and user friendliness and it's ability to stretch a person)
assessment will happen at least once in the year (meaning just one remarkable works for an a). you will be graded by professionals in your projects focus.

sept 14- playtime (that means work that you love)
projects and me-videos are streaming in - keep it up... projects due today me video due wed unit 1 test wed
_________code red alert________________________________________ huge preface (except that you can read this whenever) but please hear this: the premise of this class is new to all of us... i love your dedication..the time you have been putting in. but most of you (not all) but most of you need to hear this. stop it. time management please. you are being thrown into college/career mode deadlines - at least 1st semester are only a friendly nudge - not a reality. if you overdo - it is no longer fun. no longer work that you love. creativity/innovation die... enough said? please discuss this with me now. we all need resolution on this. - no more 10 hr projects...(in one setting)...k? things are not going to work - that's tech. that's ok. we start over - but not on your time...
those of you that aren't cranking it out - please don't hear this as more time to procrastinate. time management for this class is more like real world time management (because it's based on passion and creativity.) you have to be very smart about it. it could go either way. if you procrastinate - and then put little time in = trite projects if you procrastinate - and then put overload time in = unhealthy projects. balance..please. _________code red alert________________________________________
brainstorm - how to run class 1. traditional: (standards math) closure/mock test/test 2. nontraditional: (math project or passion project) letter to parents (and to yourself)
dan meyer - math teacher (like 5 yrs) in santa cruz recommends that teachers be less helpful a good model: 1. dan meyer posts on the grocery line 2, he gets responses from all over 3. he shares his thinking 4. dan meyer tests it out via cbs takeaways: - Everyone has an opinion on this one. Most people also have a demographic they are particularly loathe to find ahead of them in line.
- This visceral, widespread reaction to nothing more than a) a clear picture, and b) a concise question. This isn't the only way to teach, but it is a fun way.
full day of play - or hw for other classes if you neglected them this weekend because you were working on this class

sept 16- prep for test time (important stuff - let's do it)
assign: 1. read this about making videos - check ways to access nik at bottom - esp his blog: For the kind of talking head type video they are making they would probably be better off just using a webcam on a computer and recording it live from a laptop. They can do this straight in to YouTube and that saves on stuff like editing and trying to reduce file size.
There's also a great service called www.tokbox.com that can allow then to set up their own video communications and save them etc.
Basically what I do is write about and help teachers to use technology. Mainly language teachers.
Morocco is beautiful this morning with sunshine and bright blue skies. To say more than that wouldn't do it justice, it's a very diverse country with lots of contrasts, contradictions, annoyances and joys.

sept 24- making the most of boxed 90 seat time
1. please add insight (if you have any) to discussion on how to run class what i'm hearing so far: --start with 5 min talk (maybe more talking from you guys? sharing ideas/projects?) --day after test: next ch closure, next day: practice test, rest of time (week or so) - work on projects for that unit - or freebird ones --stick with test date (if you bomb you can redo - but remember that's wasted time so try to be read) --grading - per student - some need it for motivation, for most - don't worry about it - just do your best to wow the world --project due dates - best if project is done and posted, but if not done (or you are freebirding) post progress - so everyone has to post something by that date --rest of class time is yours 2. please get me videos and college/career in. will be sending an email out to bif, and colleges/universities next week. want link to me-videos to be complete.
3. do/finish practice test for monday/wed (unit 2) let's decide today

dear dear lauren: please create street project group and 5 groups for rachel's - let's make all open to the world. then you can just email everyone the link to talk.ed - telling them once they get there - to join any of the groups they want. maybe we could flag any group relating to rachel's challenge with some opening word - make it easy for everyone to find all the groups. thank you sweet

we just want you to change the name of the class. People liked the idea - they just didn't want college registrars to think the kids took the class "online" So, we started coming up with lots of other names like "Tech Infused" and "Tech Collaboration" ---- and then, someone said - hey, let Monika's kids figure out the best name.

1. take auity test
2. it was requested that we present at this - i did not bat an eye - i signed us up. it's a saturday, feb 20th. i said the title was school. the content was how to make the time we get together in a room worthwhile. that we would be sharing via skype (make croatia do it with us) and sharing projects and music, etc. they asked what particpants in your session i said they would take away the thought - kool beans - i want some of that, or i want to collab with that, or - i want to change ed with them. please tell me you're up for that....
3. try our polldaddy - i put a poll on there - please see if it works - tab on top of talk.ed
4. see our notes sections (it's a tab at top of talk.ed) or link here: stuff to do with croatia. they also are wanting you to tell them more about thanksgiving. all they know about it is what they see in the movies. (personally - i think we should start a tradition - to tell them about - our class runs the turkey trot every thanksgiving morning....yes?)
5. i'm craving feedback from each one of you. write it on a paper after you finish acuity, or email me, or message me, or dm me. i will share it with no one. i want to know specifics of how you are feeling about this class. i want honesty. my feelings won't be hurt. my head won't puff up. at 49, i finally get why we have tests and critique each other. please help tweak the class - help tweak me. this is your class - by your design, i need to know what is missing for you, what is working for you. so we can make it better. always better. grazie you darlings.
