At over 59 million, teachers are the largest group of trained professionals in the world. They know who is sick, who is missing, who is orphaned by AID Teachers Without Borders Our Mission Teachers Without Borders supports teacher leaders, worldwide, with professional development opportunities and tools that connect them with information and each other so that they may play a more vital role in their communities. We focus on teachers with initiative, who are passionate about their subjects and compassionate towards children. Teachers are acupuncture points. A great teacher can pinpoint the exact place to stimulate the health of a village, a region, an entire continent. They know who is sick, who is missing, who has been abducted into the sex trade or conscripted into a military gang, who has been orphaned by AIDS, who is achieving and who is not. Our Vision Teachers Without Borders (TWB) envisions a world where teachers are viewed as the natural and obvious key to human welfare . At over 59 million, teachers are the largest single group of trained professionals in the world. They know who is sick, who is missing, who is orphaned by AIDS. They often administer the polio drops, protect their students from danger, identify who is at risk for human trafficking or a military gang. Teachers Without Borders is an organization of teachers, worldwide. We are non-profit, with a small staff, and a large community of talented teachers, like you. Why TWB is Needed Now Teacher training is often protracted, unsupported, or missing entirely . In addition, teachers are rarely included in educational policy change or significant decision-making. Teachers Without Borders is to invite, gather, distill, synthesize, and disseminate the best collective wisdom from teacher leaders from every culture to make all teachers even more effective in contributing to the creation of a world that works for all. Teachers Without Borders depends upon local expertise. The organization is its collective wisdom; every member represents teachers everywhere. We are therefore able to work in emergencies, as part of national reform efforts, and with relief organization or charities precisely because we rely on local expertise. That expertise, in turn, is a resource for others. Furthermore, the education of girls (and retention in school) accelerates social welfare, and so any teacher’s organization must consider girls’ education as a priority. The correlations are clear: a girl educated for just one additional year positive correlates to declines in infant mortality, fewer children, increased health and family income. But one more year is not enough. This is about social justice and equity. Culture is central to what we do. Elliot Eisner of Stanford University has defined culture as “a way of life” and “a medium for growing things.” In the former case, culture is a set of traditions that don’t change. In the latter case, culture is a kind of Petri dish, which grows and adapts to modern conditions. It is a delicate balance. Mistakes are made when those who seek to preserve culture provide no tools to help communities address contemporary challenges. Similar mistakes are made by those pushing growth and change do not take into consideration the backbone of a people. TWB considers these issues at every step. Bridging the digital divide will create access to more opportunities and information. The digital divide now is not so much west vs. east or urban vs. rural, but between those that have platforms, content and knowledge networks, and those that do not. The marginalized have no ability to create and share content, build communities, and determine their own fate. One of the most important obstacles to overcome involves the ability to educate oneself, localize content, and solve problems. We acknowledge that, in this global age, information technology provides crucial and necessary tools, but is not itself an answer to a host of problems. An appropriate technology may consistent of a safe room or chalk or books. Generosity matters. We want to be known as hospitable, gracious, and generous - qualities we believe are instrumental to successful development endeavors and the momentum of human agency. We realize that generosity is a necessary, but not sufficient, form of addressing needs and engaging communities. A healthy society and a global citizen require sacrifice, resources, and support. d r i p :
